Guide to the topic: Care of your KOENIG jewellery pieces

To ensure that your jewellery does not lose its shine, proper care is particularly important.
We will show you how to clean your jewels yourself and give you a few simple tips on what is important for gentle care. The best and easiest way to restore your favorite pieces to their former glory is regular cleaning, as well as an occasional visit to one of our boutiques for professional cleaning and inspection of your pieces to prevent any signs of wear and damage at an early stage.

Store jewellery properly

The right jewellery care already starts with the correct storage.
If you store your jewellery correctly, you will benefit from it in the long term and can enjoy it every day.

We recommend:

  • It is best to store your jewels in a lockable jewellery box, preferably lined with fabric or leather.
Silver in particular oxidizes much less this way.

  • Each piece of jewellery should have its own place. Especially necklaces should always be closed with the carabiner as soon as you put them down to avoid knots.

  • Take off your jewellery when showering, going to the sauna, as well as for fitness activities.
You should also be careful when applying creams to your skin afterwards. Some ingredients attack alloys, gemstones and especially pearls. Also, contact with shampoo, skin creams, perfumes, and hairspray will cause deposits to form on the gemstones, making them appear dull.

Cleaning silver jewellery and accessories

Silver is particularly susceptible to discoloration. Over time, it tarnishes and a black patina covers the jewellery. Light soiling can be removed with a soft silver cloth. Carefully run it over the piece to be cleaned with little pressure and in circular motions and then rinse it thoroughly with clear water.

Pearl care

If you want to clean pearls, be careful. The natural surface consisting of calcium carbonate is very sensitive. Be sure to keep pearl jewellery away from detergents or other chemical products.
Moisture, heat, as well as chemical substances attack the surface and leave unsightly stains, so you should also be careful with pearl necklaces with perfume, as the alcohol content attacks the top layer of the pearl.
The simplest option is to rub the pearl with a special pearl care cloth.

Cleaning gemstone jewellery

Gemstones beautifully reflect incident light, but over time a thin film of dirt can form on them.
Instead of intense colors and a noble shine, they look dull and milky.

Since gemstones can be very sensitive to chemical products, you should also avoid using mild soaps. Only lukewarm water should be used for cleaning - please do not use too hot water. So gently remove the dirt with a soft toothbrush and then dry the jewellery with a soft microfiber cloth or household paper.

Cleaning diamonds

Clean diamonds with lukewarm water, an ordinary dishwashing detergent, and a soft toothbrush. Rinse the diamond under running water (be careful with open sinks/drains) and use a fiber-free cloth for drying.

In addition, we recommend that you have diamond jewellery professionally cleaned by us on a regular basis. This way, even deep-seated dirt in hard-to-reach places can be removed and the fit of the stones in their mounting can be checked.

Beware of:

We recommend that you do not purchase an ultrasonic bath, as they can damage your jewellery if used too frequently and incorrectly, and as a result, diamonds in particular will begin to move and, in the worst case, fall out of their setting.

The movement of the ultrasonic also causes the stones to vibrate and work their way into the precious metal until they get too much play and fall out.

Conclusion

We always welcome your visit to stop by for a drink while we take care of your jewellery for cleaning and inspection in the meantime.

Sincerely

Your KOENIG Team
