As soon as it comes to the Rolex Explorer, everybody thinks of course about the first ascent of the Mount Everest. The highest mountain of the world was conquered in May 1953 by Sir Edmund
Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Both gentlemen were equipped with prototypes of the legendary Explorer model.

Already at the end of 1952 the first prototypes of this model were ready
in Geneva. Nobody still thought about the name Explorer at this time.
These prototypes also did not correspond optically yet to the watch type which one associates today with the Explorer. The dials were still white at that time, and also the typical Arabian
figures on position 3, 6 and 9 were absent. After the successful British-Nepalese expedition the name Explorer appeared for the first time, at the end of 1953, on the dial
of the reference 6350, the first so called "EXPLORER".
The direct predecessors of the 6350, reference 6298 and 6150, had the legendary 3-6-9 dials but still without Explorer addition. At their time of production, the highest mountain of the world was
not yet conquered. With the introduction of the name Explorer, this model gets it's permanent establishment in the Rolex family, and was, as all of the other models from Geneva, continuously
changed and also improved during the decades. No matter how well a timepiece was, it received always upgradings - typical for Rolex.
