It was a nice conversation with my counterpart and we had an interesting exchange of personal points of views ; but finally I had to ask a sensible, question:
“Would you disclose your secret where your vintage watches receive a proper service?” My conversation partner looked amazed, as he always went with various vintage watches to a watchmaker around
the corner; based on the fact, that the easiest way is of course the best. The loupe around the watchmaker’s neck combined with a sovereign smile and imaginary expertise wrapped my conversation
partner since the very first beginning around his finger, and I have to admit, that such an obviously professional genius seems to be a good choice – at first glance….Almost timidly I ask again:
“Could you please tell me how you know if your timepiece is still in possession of all its original components, and does your treasure correspond to the delivery state from 1978, the year of
manufacture?” My opposite’s reaction tells me, that there might be some question marks – maybe I am a little right? I assume, that each Vintage-Watch-Enthusiast knows the latest statement of Mr.
Francois-Henry Bennahmias (CEO – Audemars Piguet) regarding the delicate Vintage-Watch-Topic? His words were: “We have to take over this market, as we can master this mission much better
than other suppliers.” What is the content of this statement if we analyze it objective and absolutely neutral?
A global brand wants to take care about their products and service them in a professional way and if necessary, due to wear over the decades, replace parts with in house originals; just how it
should be. By the way, the Vintage – Watchdealers and so called “watchmakers” are not supplied with original spare parts by the motherhouses. We have to accept that all companies, and not only
Audemars Piguet, are the manufacturer of their products and do know the exact details about their own timepieces. The motherhouse has the documentation about their watches and details, not
freelancing charlatans. Why shall we try to find an alternative for the already existing? Permit me to say: Finally someone supports what I am trying to explain since 30 years – the motherhouse
is the only true. To be honest, I felt a little stupid by myself during the years, almost alone in the fields of Vintage-Watches . Even more happy I am now about the valuable thrust of Mr.
Bennahmias and I hope others will follow. For the sake of good order I have to admit, that the watch crisis during the 70’s, and the clientele with its continuous aspiration for new things, have
played into the hands of the freelancing watchmakers. In those days a lot of the famous brands did not feel responsible for their pedigree, history and in this context for their products which
opened the doors to the independent watchmakers. Thankfully the big names with their beautiful products left this path. A brand is only as good as its history, and almost any company realized
this fact over the last decades. I can put your mind at ease, and please be reassured that I have made my experience again and again – and anybody can avoid to make the same experiences/mistakes.
Nowadays the clients get more and more confused and some amongst us took a poor internet-forum-tip or advice into account. Start to set the right priorities and abandon the misbelief of the
past, no matter how bitter it may be. Encourage yourself and start again to question what you hear or somebody tries to explain to you and ask yourself: “Were my past thoughts right?” But
please do not doubt your virtue, actual there is no blame on you; of course you have to trust somebody, but if you cannot rely on a manufacturer of a product, for heaven’s sake whom else can you
rely on? Actually it is pretty easy the older we get – and now my vis-á-vis looks at me with a twinkle in his eyes - to evaluate things in the right way. Think something over and make the
smart and right decisions. The pool of experience and knowledge grew and continuously grows….. and if you might have a problem or concerns with the best of intentions to purchase a Vintage-Watch,
no matter if it is an Audemars Piguet, a Rolex, a Patek Philippe, an Omega or whatever, give the service document of the motherhouse a try.
It is so easy – and enjoy your genuine Vintage-Watch on your wrist!
